You are absolutely right Markus! I had a personal experience in New Zealand's wilderness when I wished that I had personal locator beacon with me. I don't think that people who come to New Zealand only for a vacation would buy a PLB, but they always can rent one for a tramp.

Hi Greg, another important thing I always carry on my tramps is a personal locator beacon (PLB). Usually there is no or very poor mobile phone coverage in New Zealand's wilderness and a satellite phone or PLB may be the only way to get quick help in an emergency. I've just bought a new PLB and wrote an article about it on http://www.skylark.co.nz/wp/plb-personal-locator-beacons-406-mhz/ PLBs do save lives.
