New Zealand Cities Facts and Ecology
In this post I will write about some interesting facts on New Zealand cities. There is a relatively small number of New Zealand cities compared to the total area of New Zealand. New zealand cities include only one city with population above 1 million citizens, which is Auckland (1,300,000 citizens as of 2007), 5 cities with populations between 100,000 and 500,000 (Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Dunedin and Tauranga) and ten cities with population between 30,000 and 100,000. All other New Zealand cities have smaller populations.
The environment is a very big issue in New Zealand in general and in New Zealand cities in particular. Virtually every person in NZ is aware of nature’s importance, and many steps being taken to conserve NZ’s beautiful nature. However there are facts that show us that a lot more has to be done in conservation of nature. For example 30 percent of all fish deaths reported in Auckland streams are due to concrete and cement washwater discharges! Who would have thought that this could happen in NZ? Another frightening figure – approximately 9,000,000 liters of oil is unaccounted for each year in the Auckland region! The only thing it can mean is that this oil goes to streams and lakes.
And what about Wellington, the first among New Zealand cities? Let’s take one example that could hint us what happens there. Capital Egg Company Ltd was convicted in 2008 for illegal discharge of approximately 180 tons (!) of chicken effluent to land entering water and discharge without consent. Those discharges occurred between 2005 and 2007 and contaminated a tributary of the Oteranga Stream. Well the good thing is that they were caught which shows that the government is serious about caring for mother Nature.
This was a small insight into what’s happening with New Zealand’s struggle for better future of it’s nature.
