View on Rangitoto Volcano from Sky Tower

Actually I included this photo to show that in addition to beautiful nature New Zealand also has big cities with skyscrapers. Actually there are two cities like that – Auckland and Wellington. What you see in this photo is a view from Sky Tower in Auckland. In the distance you can see the beautiful cone of the Rangitoto volcano, and you can take a ferry to it from Auckland.

Good day to everybody who was patiently waiting for my return!
And, as I promised, I return to writing for my blog, which is as you know, all about New Zealand and its magnificent Nature.

I decided to start with my traditional Photo-Of-The-Week, and as a “compensation” for my long absence I will also offer this photo for free download at my Free Wallpaper Download section.

I took this photo at sunset on Pekapeka beach, which is a small seaside locality on the Kapiti Coast of New Zealand’s North Island. In the right-center you can see the silhouette of the Kapiti Island. Kapiti Island is a birds sanctuary – it is home to native birds such as takahe, kokako, brown teal, stitchbirds, and tieke (saddleback), miromiro, piwakawaka, ruru, weka (hybrid of North and South Island subspecies), hihi, and toutouwai. The Brown Kiwi and Little Spotted Kiwi were released on the island between 1890 and 1910, and the island is now the stronghold for them.

Deep Blue Sea

This time I chose to display a somewhat abstract photo of the sea, which I happen to like very much. In this case I prefer to leave the location of this photograph unrevealed. There are some places out there that I prefer to leave to myself. Sorry guys!

Library in Glenorchy

Small town of Glenorchy on the South Island of New Zealand was my starting point for the famous Routeburn Great Walk. Actually I combined Routeburn track with Greenstone track making it pretty much a round trip. But before setting off to tramping, I took a day and wandered around Glenorchy. This small building captured my attention, and I am still not sure whether this is a real library or historical building.

D’Urville valley

This is the view of D’Urville Vally as you can see it after going over the Moss Pass. When I hiked there, a big chunk of snow remained at the top of the pass and it was a pretty steep climb. But it was worth the effort! Nelson Lakes National Park is one of the most beautiful places I have visited in New Zealand.

Baldwin Street of Dunedin, New Zealand is officially recognized by the Guinness Book to be the steepest street in the world at a 35% grade. It is located in the suburb of North East Valley. At its maximum the slope of Baldwin Street is such that for every 2.86 meters traveled horizontally, the elevation rises by 1 meter!

I took this photo while tramping one of the most famous New Zealand’s great walks – The Abel Tasman Great Walk. Most of it goes along the shore through beautiful sandy beaches. But sometimes you go a little bit up the hill and have a chance to look at the beach and the ocean from above, which gives you a whole new perspective.
